Playing Catch Up

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I last posted... I've been quite busy and just didn't get around to it, but here it [finally] is: an update on what we've been doing to support and promote the dairy industry!

First off, we went shopping. A Dairy Ambassador must have an appropriate professional wardrobe, and when you're shopping for three girls, it can take a while to get what is all needed. So we shopped... and we shopped some more. Thankfully, we found pretty much everything that was necessary after only a couple trips (and thankfully, we were able to go and eat afterwards to "recharge" us)! We are planning on having a "fashion show" at the next Dairy Women's meeting. :)

April 9th and 10th were the dates of the Whatcom County Youth Fair. On the 9th, Brenda and I made butter with Cheryl D. and the children who were enrolled in the Dairy division. I can attest to the fact that it takes a lot of elbow grease to make your own butter! On the 10th, I handed out ribbons to the kids during the Fit and Show and Type contests. I was also doubling as a teen leader, so it ended up being a crazy, busy and awesome weekend for me!

On April 12th, we were privileged to witness the coronation of the Skagit-Island County Dairy Ambassador, Kaylin W. It was a neat experience to be able to see how a different county had a different coronation. It is also really exciting that Skagit and Island counties have an Ambassador this year, as no one ran for the position last year.

Later that week, on the 17th, we had two events to attend. Maleah and Brenda attended the annual plowing match dinner, and I went to the Snohomish County Coronation. By all reports, everyone enjoyed themselves at both these events. The Snohomish County Dairy Ambassador this year is Emily N., and the Alternates are Shannon R., and Emily Z.

April 20th-22nd was the annual Milk Maker's Festival, held at the Lynden Fairgrounds. During this event, hundreds of first-graders from around the county came to learn about the dairy industry and how a dairy farm works. These kids learned about everything from dairy products to calf care. The Whatcom County Dairy Ambassadors ran the dairy products station. We each took turns teaching the kids about dairy products and their health benefits. Our Washington State Dairy Ambassador, Melissa C., was also present on the 20th.

I also had the opportunity to watch last year's Alternate Ambassador, Stephanie V.B., make some school presentations at a local elementary school. She did a great job, and it was a good experience to see what the school presentations are all about. Great job, Stephanie, and good luck in the state competition!

With June/Dairy month just around the corner, there are a number of events lined up for your Dairy Ambassadors to attend. What's ahead?

May 29th- We're going to be in the Ski to Sea Parade! Come down to Bellingham and see us. :)

June 1st- We will be presenting a gift basket to the first baby born in June, in honor of Dairy Month. So if you're expecting and are due June 1st, you might want to tell "Junior" to be on time! :)

June 5th- A local favorite: the Farmer's Day Parade! Come to Lynden, where you will once again have the privilege of seeing us all dressed up. :)

June 16th- I will be making a presentation at the Saint Luke's Adult Day Care. So excited!!

June 25th- Washington State Dairy Ambassador Coronation

Well, that's about all for now... I promise to post some photos next time! So long!

Everybody before coronation.

Don't Blink...

Wow! We don't have much time to get used to being ambassadors/princesses before we're busy again!

This weekend was Super Saturday. Brenda, Maleah and I helped the kids make ice cream! It was fun to get to know some more of the kids around here and to educate them a little bit about the benefits of the dairy industry and the importance of milk for health. Did you know that milk supplies 9 important nutrients to your diet?

I woke up at 6:45am on Monday for a radio interview with Joe and Patti on 790 KGMI. Having talked to Joe on Saturday, we were planning for a 7:45am interview, but that obviously didn't work, since I got woken up an hour earlier. :) We really do have to be ready on a moment's notice! My mom posted a link on her facebook status (http://kgmi.com/Morning-News/2990291) which apparently leads to a recording of the interview. My family made me listen to it... My voice really does sound like a little kid on the phone!

Well that's about all for now!

L-R: Brenda, Me, and Maleah before the Dairy Ambassador Coronation

And So It All Begins

Yesterday was the Whatcom County Dairy Ambassador coronation and today I can say that I am the Whatcom County Dairy Ambassador. Wow! What a responsibility! I had so much fun yesterday with the other girls who were running! I think we're going to have a great time this year representing the dairy industry here in Whatcom County. I truly look forward to serving my community in this way, along with Maleah S. and Brenda R.!

I thought that it might be a good idea to start a blog. Because I know this year is just going to fly by and before I know it, it'll all be over. Also, I think it's a good idea so that people can keep up with what we'll be doing (like my mom haha). :) So here I plan to chronicle the Dairy Ambassador events. My former blogs have not been so successful so hopefully this one works.

What, you might ask, is all involved in Coronation day? Well, we are certainly kept busy! I will try provide some timeline of what we all did yesterday:

9:00am-- I got picked up at my house by Jackie B. and we drove to the fairgrounds and arrived there around 9:20am.

9:45am-- The candidates, chaperones, and reigning royalty got to have breakfast together and got to know the judges.

10:00am-- The candidates and reigning royalty adjourned to the People's place to get ready for interviews.

10:30am-- Each candidate gets a 15 minute interview in front of all the judges, in the Farm Friends office.

11:15am-- We each got to meet with Dillon H., our Master of Ceremonies, so that he could get to know us a little better for when he introduced us at the dinner.

12:00am-- Lunch time. We had a delicious lunch provided and ate with the judges, Dairy Women, and reigning royalty. We then gave our 3 minute speech to everyone present except the other 2 candidates, and then we got asked an impromptu question.

1:15pm-- We adjourned back to the People's place, where we put on our kahki's and got our nice new Got Milk shirts so that we could go on our outreach.

1:30pm-- We left on our outreach to Lynden Christian's Preschool class. We helped the kids make pudding paintings (yummy!) and educated them about milk products and passed around yogurt for them to eat.

2:45pm-- We changed into our evening gowns and practiced entering and exiting for a long time. :)

3:45pm-- The judges had a second interview with us. This one was only 5-10 minutes long.

4:00pm-- The hairstylists arrive and helped us get ready for the evening.

5:45pm-- Photo time! We got a bunch of photos of all of us while we were all dressed up for the evening.

6:20pm-- Receiving line begins. We said hi to everyone, and shook their hands.

7:00pm-- Dinner time/Coronation banquet

Yes, it was a busy day, but it was really fun, and we all had a good time and are excited to be the Ambassadors for milk here in Whatcom County!
